Bahubali: The Beginning Baahubali: The Beginning (2016) is an Indian epic historical fiction film written and directed by S. S. Rajamouli. This movie is an adaptation of Mahabharata and stars Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamannaah Bhatia in lead roles. Baahubali: The Beginning was released on 28 April 2016 to great critical acclaim with the highest-ever opening day collections for any Indian film up to that point 12 years ago(1). The movie begins with a narration of the Mahabharata story by a woman named Aditi (Kajal Aggarwal), who says that the main story is too large to be told in full, and that there were many stories on which it hung. She says that on one such story, a young boy Bahubali (Prabhas) needs to be told, and so she starts narrating the story of Baahubali. In a small kingdom called Maheshvara Nagara, there lived a king named Bhallaladeva who was stolen from his mother at an early age and brought up by his father Mahadeva Rayudu (Rana Daggubati). He had a son named Devasena and a step-brother named Amarendra Baahubali (Prabhas) by his father's first wife Rajamatha Sivagami Devi (Anushka Shetty). One day Amarendra Baahubali takes the blame for his brother Devasena as he is hit with a log of wood by their teacher Mahaprasthanika. In the chaos that occurs Bhallaladeva, the father of both the brothers, thinks that Amarendra is responsible for this and banishes him from the kingdom. On seeing this incident, the queen swoons and is on her deathbed after giving birth to another child, Ghatotkacha. Bahubali takes a vow that he would not let anyone come in the way of his relationship with his mother and he would avenge this insult in a suitable manner. He leaves the palace and goes to the forest vowing never to return until his mother's insult is avenged. In the forest, Baahubali comes across an old lady who tells him about a kingdom called Mahishmati which was ruled by her late husband Maharaj Rudra Bahu I (Sathyaraj). When she dies, Bahubali decides to take her body to Mahishmati and give it proper cremation rites at the hands of Maharaj Rudra Bahu II (Prabhakar). He eventually reaches Mahishmati but it has been deserted after the fall of the kingdom into ruin. He comes across an old sage who tells him that Maharaj Rudra Bahu II has also passed away, leaving only an infant son Ghatotkacha. Bahubali decides to stay in the city with Ghatotkacha since he was promised by his mother that she will be alive again in Mahishmati if he helped her son.
